Terminé resolviendo el problema construyendo y ejecutando una consulta SQL sin procesar para realizar el incremento automático y la inserción en una sola transacción de base de datos. Pasé mucho tiempo estudiando detenidamente el código fuente de Django para comprender cómo funciona su método predeterminado de guardado del modelo para poder hacerlo de la manera más sólida posible. Sin embargo, espero que esto deba modificarse para backends que no sean MySQL.
Primero, creé una clase abstracta de la que ahora se derivará ObjectLog, que presenta este nuevo método de guardar:
