Problema UNION y ORDER BY en MySQL

Prueba:

UNION ALL -- guaranteed to be beneficial in this case as Johan commented

(SELECT * 
FROM highscore 
WHERE score < '$score'
ORDER BY score DESC
LIMIT 5)";
