Valores de clave principal de intercambio de MySQL

No utilice tablas temporales para esto.

Del manual :

mysql> SELECT * FROM temp_table, temp_table AS t2;
ERROR 1137: Can't reopen table: 'temp_table'

Lo siento si no lo entiendo bien, pero ¿por qué no funciona un simple intercambio de tres vías?
